Welcome to Whippet on the Wire

Whippet on the Wire is a new creative network for companies and individuals in the creative and digital sector in Yorkshire and Humber (and friends further afield). It's a chance to share ideas, be inspired, find partners and collaborators, make new networks and find out what's going in the region.
Use the site to showcase your talent, make new contacts, flag up your events and let others know about interesting stuff you've found (new widgets, great sites, top people, new trends, amazing places). Whippet on the Wire has two sister sites; 38 Minutes for Scotland and Northern Ireland and Who Needs the Sea in the West Midlands. This site is powered by 4iP and supported by Screen Yorkshire.

What is 4iP?

4iP is an innovation fund to stimulate public service digital media (beyond television) across the UK. In plain English, that means supporting great ideas for websites, games and mobile services which help people improve their lives. Channel 4 has worked with regional partners to create a £50m pot to invest in public service media innovation. Themes that 4iP is particularly interested in are;

Hidden gems - tools and sites to help people discover stuff which could change their lives
Digital democracy - new ways to let everyone keep an eye on money and power
Amplifying voices - new ways to empower those communities that media could never previously reach.
Wise crowds - connecting people who need to know stuff with people who know it already
Tools to make trouble - developing disruptive media tools, then putting them in the hands of people that need them most.

In Yorkshire and Humber alone there is up to £10m to invest in great ideas and regional talent. 4iP's regional partners are Yorkshire Forward and Screen Yorkshire.

Small Fish can make a Big Splash

This blog entry stems from two disparate influences... the first is a chip on my shoulder (I shall elaborate later) and the other is one of the most engaging round-table style forums I have had the privilege to participate in. As a preemptive measure against wading through a slurry of vitriolic responses, I would like to state (with due humility) that the views expressed here are subjective and personal.

Setting the scene: The chip on my shoulder

So, beginning on a self-indulgent… Continue

Improvising in Kyoto

Hello folks,

Today is the last in the series of the breath-awareness workshops that I set out to deliver across five cities in Japan. I am feeling rather melancholy that this programme is coming to an end, especially since it has been so well received by the target audience and because it has been the most tremendous experience.

The idea for this initiative emerged during my research at the University of York. I was looking at ways in which breath-awareness/training could be introduced within… Continue

Technology Strategy Board - Digital Britain Test Bed Procurement

On June 16th, the Technology Strategy Board published its strategy in support of the Digital Britain agenda. One of the key action items in this strategy is the provisioning of a Digital Test Bed to allow businesses and users to explore the effects of alternative network operating models, business models and service platforms.

Over the summer the Technology Strategy Board, assisted by the Digital Communications KTN, has been consulting with the ICT and content industry together with other stake… Continue

Music video is an electronic erotic rendition of a Japanese folk song

The Plum Song is the newest music video created by Omodaka, the Japanese experimental electropop group that describes itself as a "mutational fusion of music and motion graphics." It features the voice of folk singer Akiko Kanazawa and art direction by Teppei Maki, and pays homage to the Edo period (1603-1868) red light district in Tokyo called Yoshiwara. The video hit YouTube a few weeks ago, but the song will be available for purchase on iTunes today or tomorrow (or you can buy it on Hear Japan now). via TokyoMango Previously: Electropop remix of the oldest Japanese song ever...

Handcuffed, suspected bank robber eats alleged stick-up note

At around 19 seconds into this police car video, an alleged bank robber eats a piece of paper, which police say was a stick-up note. I think the guy is suppressing a grin. Raw Dash Cam: Bank Robber Gobbles Up Holdup Note...

Milton Glaser on drawing and thinking

In this short video by C. Coy, designer Milton Glaser draws a picture of Shakespeare while talking about the ways that drawing helps him think and perceive: "for me, drawing has always been a primary way of encountering reality." His ideas reminding me of cartoonist Seth's short essay for The Walrus called "The Quiet Art of Cartooning." Both Seth and Glaser are in agreement that your mind opens up on interesting ways while you draw. Teachers who prevent students from drawing and doodling while being taught a lesson are hindering their learning....

Much loved photo supply store B&H sued for job discrimination against women

B&H, the photo and video gear company much-loved by photogs and filmmakers worldwide is in hot water over employment discrimination claims - again. Four women claim they were denied sales positions because of their gender. According to reports I'm seeing, there are historically no female sales staff at B&H? Earlier this year, the store paid $4 million to Latino warehouse workers who claimed they were denied promotions. CBS, NYT, The Photo Forum. (via becthomasphotography , via Joseph Linaschke)...

Technology to generate power from slow moving river and ocean currents

Chris Connors of MAKE has a post about "a new way of generating electricity with the slow moving currents found in most of the rivers and oceans of the world." (Video here.) VIVACE is the first known device that could harness energy from most of the water currents around the globe because it works in flows moving slower than 2 knots (about 2 miles per hour.) Most of the Earth's currents are slower than 3 knots. Turbines and water mills need an average of 5 or 6 knots to operate efficiently. VIVACE stands for Vortex Induced Vibrations for Aquatic Clean Energy. It doesn't depend on waves, tides, turbines or dams. It's a unique hydrokinetic energy system that relies on "vortex induced vibrations." Ocean currents can power the world, say scientists...
